Climate and environmental investment in the maritime bridge between Kapellskär and Naantali

Ports of Stockholm has applied for an EU investment grant for a project that will meet customer demands and the needs of the future. It is also an environmental investment that would result in significantly lower emissions of carbon dioxide and air pollutants at the Port of Kapellskär.

Ports of Stockholm and the Port of Naantali, with the shipping company Finnlines as coordinator, have decided to apply for an EU grant that among other things would help them to jointly reduce air pollutant emissions from shipping within the port areas. To meet customer demand for services and future needs auto-mooring capabilities and a new passenger tower is planned.

The Port of Kapellskär and the Port of Naantali both belong to the comprehensive EU network, the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

“The Port of Kapellskär is one of the most important maritime links for the transport of goods and passengers within Europe. With the planned actions Ports of Stockholm can continue its work of making climate and environmental sustainability an integrated part of its operations,” says Bino Drummond, Deputy Chairman of Kapellskärs Hamn AB.

The entire project will involve modernising the Port of Kapellskär to adapt it for the larger vessels that Finnlines plans to introduce into service in a few years time.

The planned project will also require investments in facilities for the provision of onshore power for vessels at the quayside. Connecting to onshore power significantly reduces the environmental impact of vessels in port, as the vessels can shut down their engines and operate instead using electricity from the local power grid.

“This investment is entirely in line with the goals we have for sustainable shipping in the Stockholm region and throughout the EU. The results will be significantly reduced emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants,” says Fredrik Lindstål, Chair of the Board of Stockholms Hamn AB.

The planned EU grant application is part of the EU investment priority category “Motorways of the Sea”, where there is the possibility to be awarded 30 percent grant funding for the period 2020-2022.
