Giant ramps installed at Stockholm Norvik Port

Huge future dimension- and capacity-proof ramps for rolling goods have been installed at Stockholm Norvik Port. The RoRo terminal at the port is scheduled to open this autumn and has been equipped to be able to handle the larger vessels of the future.

Two ramps for the RoRo terminal arrived at Stockholm Norvik Port at the weekend. The ramps each weigh 150 tonnes, are 30 metres wide and have a length of 16 metres. They will be used for rolling goods.

The ramps are hydraulically controlled and can withstand a load equivalent to three juggernauts travelling side-by-side. The hydraulics are so strong that they can be height-adjusted under full load.

“It feels really good that the ramps have arrived and that we have achieved yet another milestone in the completion of the RoRo terminal at Stockholm Norvik Port,” says Markus Johansson, Operational Manager at Port of Nynäshamn.

The RoRo terminal is scheduled to open in September and will be operated by Ports of Stockholm. The two quay-berths for RoRo vessels are 230 metres-long and 280 metres-long, respectively, with respective depths of 10.5 metres and 10 metres. Both the quays and the ramps are dimensioned to be able to handle vessels larger than those that currently call at Ports of Stockholm. At one of the quay-berths the foundations have also been prepared for additionally constructing an upper ramp that will further increase loading and unloading capacities.

These are the final two of nine ramps in total that have been delivered to Ports of Stockholm in recent years. Five were delivered to the recently newly rebuilt Värtahamnen Port and two to the reconstructed Port of Kapellskär. All of the ramps have the same design and come from the same manufacturer.
