Super-post-Panamax cranes now in place at Stockholm Norvik Port

The largest container cranes in the Baltic Sea are now in place at Sweden’s newest freight port. The cranes are a combination of the best technology from Asia and an intelligent system manufactured by the Swedish company ABB.

The two new super-post-Panamax cranes have now been moved to their locations at Stockholm Norvik Port, where they will feature for many years to come. The cranes were built in Shanghai in China and the electrical and control systems were supplied by ABB in Sweden. The capacity of the cranes, as well as close proximity to the major fairways and the good range of options for onward transport by haulage vehicle, train or barge, will provide efficient handling and service at the new port.

“The super-post-Panamax cranes are the largest on the Swedish east coast and they are adapted to handle the largest container vessels operating in the Baltic Sea,” explains Johan Wallén, Director of Sales and Marketing at Ports of Stockholm.

The cranes each measure 120 meters tall at their maximum height setting and have a lifting capacity of just over 80 tonnes. The cranes can straddle a width of 22 containers and can serve the largest vessels of the world without any height restrictions. The cranes will be operated remotely from a control centre in the port´s main building, with no operator on the cranes themselves, and 80 percent of the lifting will be automated.

The vessel Zhen Hua 32 arrived with the fully assembled cranes on 18th March. On arrival, the ballast tanks of the vessel were used to adjust the deck height to the same height as the quayside. Each 2000 tonne crane was then winched ashore on temporary tracks leading from the vessel. The cranes are now being made ready for operation when Stockholm Norvik Port opens in May.

The container terminal will be run by Hutchison Ports, one of the world's largest container terminal operators, with 52 ports in 27 countries.
